If you arent going to be doing some heavy backpacking, then I dont think it really matters.

If you were going to get into heavy weights and extended hiking trips/hunting trips, then Meindl, Lowa or Vasque are the boots I would go with. My Meindl's are indestructable. I take care of them and I feel they will last for at least 5 years of heavy backpacking.

If you are only thinking about going on light day hikes without much weight then a mid boot/trail shoe would be a good bet. It depends on how long you want to get out of them.

For about the highest quality medium weight mid boot on the market within your price range, I would look at the Lowa Renegade GTX Mid. This one would be light enough to do active trail running/walking but tough enough with a good enough sole to support a load if you decide to transition into heavier hiking.
These Meindl Nebraska Mid's would be a really nice cheaper alternative.

I've put mine through hell and they are going on 3 years. Best boot I've ever owned.
