This is very, very real and extremely sad.
I've worked with these kids who have decided, come hell or high water, they are getting out of the ghetto. Yet, they can't celebrate their wins and accomplishments at home or with family/friends for fear of being yelled at or physically abused.
Floored me.
I have seen that in action as well. They were mocked for "acting white".
"White" really can be an insult and is an evil thing to call somebody in their world. My students (1st graders) once came to me, upset that a bad child had called me a "bad name". They did not want to repeat the name. These were kids who had no problem saying all curse words so this must have been a really bad word. The bad word? It was "white". The bad kid called me "white"
I told my kind I was white and it was ok, it was not a bad thing. They knew I was not mean and was very loving. They did not want to see me as white. They went back and told the kid " You wrong for calling dat lady white. Dat lady is nice and she be pink!"
I loved them for that! They stood up for me and loved me. And yes, I loved them very much too and they knew it. I taught in the ghetto by choice, I knew those kids needed me and appreciated me.
