My mother in law even said "Batman and Superman should not be fighting. They should be on the same team." I then tried to explain to her that they team up later in the movie. Her response was "then why are they calling it Batman vs Superman?"

That statement right there is said by the majority of people, including myself. No one wants to watch a movie where they think the whole movie is about Batman fighting against Superman. You have to remember that the majority of people in this country are idiots. They will see the title and say "i'm not going watch Superman kill Batman"

It's just a really stupid name for a movie.
It's like telling Marvel fans, "hey, we are going to make a movie with Spider-man and Captain America, our two most popular characters in our universe, since we just got a hold of the rights to Spider-man, and we'll call the movie, Spider-man Vs Captain America, and then we'll follow it up with Wolverine vs Iron Man"
Or we could make the Avengers and follow it up with a sequel and make over $3 billion between them.
Marvel took Captain America and they've made him the most popular super hero currently, and it seems DC is trying to make us not like Superman.

And yet, this movie will make half a billion dollars.

I can't disagree with that. Maybe the studio is saying "frick the average movie goer". That's not a very good idea, IMO. There has been talk for years about a Batman vs Superman movie. The fans have wanted one for awhile. But the average movie goer is like "What the frick is this?" Like I said, if it's a good movie, it won't matter. The characters are very well known. It would just go down as a really good movie with a bad title. Which is what I think a lot of people said when the title was released. Maybe they should have just gone with a Batman /Superman title or a Batman and Superman: Dawn of Justice (as in Dawn of the Justice League). The animated movies have done this with some success. It may have been a better idea than trying to sell this Batman vs Superman heavyweight bout. You can still have the fight, just don't sell it as the entire movie.
