depends. if algae sets in, i use a formula on that website to determine how much to keep it at until the algae is dead which means i may go through 10+ gallons in a few days.
i typically buy the 3 gallon packs at sams probably weekly during the summer for roughly $10 each time.

I rarely, if ever, have an algae problem.
You are having them b/c you aren't maintaining a correct amount of chlorine. The Clorox dissipates too quickly (as it is designed to do). You are, in effect, shocking the pool on a too-often basis.
I don't see how you're saving money, not being a Dick, I've had a pool for a long time.
