There is a rumor that during last month's Chalk Talk, a limited season ticket holder meeting which featured the Pelicans general manager (no media), Dell Demps reportedly said that Holiday would remain on a minute restriction and so his best role would be to continue as a reserve.

Was anyone at the Chalk Talk to give us some context? Is Jrue permanently a 6th man or just for the rest of the season?

You know how rumors and sources are these days.

They did, and he has played more than 30 minutes multiple times, but he hasn't played 30 minutes enough when Tyreke and Gordon are out that it does make you wonder. The Chalk Talk rumor was something I hadn't seen before.

The way this season is going, I am fine with it. We aren't winning or going far as the 8th seed and matching up with GS...again.

I rather Jrue's injury issue resolve itself and have a more competitive team with Jrue leading the PG position next year than have him over-stress it and end up having to play restricted next year as well.

According to a source within the Pelicans’ organization, the short answer to that question is no. Holiday is completely healthy, and the decision to keep him out of the starting lineup is entirely a strategic one reached by multiple parties, including Holiday himself. Coming off of the bench allows him an opportunity to gauge how the opponent is defending the Pelicans’ starting guards, something that factors into his higher level of comfort in that role. Regarding his workload, this is an area where analytics come into play. By using data from player tracking tools such as Catapult and SportVU, the Pelicans are able to determine where his production begins to decline and adjust his playing time accordingly.

Yeah, I'm definitely not calling for more minutes, I'm just curious about specifics of the Chalk Talk to see if it's a precaution for this season or longer term.

I am curious as well

The interesting fact when you look at Ginobili and Parker, the most Ginobili has averaged was 31 MPG in 07-08, that year Parker averaged 33.5 MPG. Ginobili's career high was that year, Parker's career high was 34.4 in his 3rd year.

Curious to see if keeping him at 30-32MPG is the ideal situation to aid him from stress injuries in the future.

I'd like to see him play 36 a night until the break. If we go into tank mode after the deadline, then totally fine with him playing the 28 mins he currently is playing.

ETA: if the plan is to play him 30 minutes a night like the Spurs, then we should flip him because he will cost at least 4/80 in '18, and I am not okay leaving big money on the bench anymore.

What's the difference between a guy starting and playing 30 min a game and a guy coming off the bench and playing 30 min a game when they're both in at the end of halfs and OT, not like we would be paying him to be a backup point guard averaging 20 min a game and never in at the end.

Max guys play 35 or so a night. 5-6 less minutes a night over the course of a season is about the equivalent of 10 full games. That is the issue.

ETA: talking about the future, not this year.

$20 isn't Max. In 2017 the cap will have increased 85% since the days when we complained about guys like Posey, Okafor and injured Gordon. $11 with an 85% increase is what? That's right, $20. The new first time max should be around $26-$27 then.

Gotcha. I'm all in on Jrue, but if we are limiting his minutes next year that is a huge red flag.

It is, but I also would think it might get you a bit of a discount with the uncertainty, and if he plays a season and a half at 30 MPG I think we'd feel reasonably safe in committing to him.

Played 30 tonight. First 18 minutes were elite. Last 12 minutes were the worst I've ever seen him play.

I wonder also if there is a conditioning issue. No knock on Jrue, but he's missed a ton of time the last 2 years with an injury that has probably made it difficult to maintain starting nba point guard level conditioning.

Combine that with how hard he generally plays and Gentry's uptempo system and he very well may have tired legs. If he doesn't now, he most certainly might in the coming weeks as this is the most games he has played in 3 years. These factors may be contributing to the Pels analytics stance of how many minutes they think Jrue can play and play at a high level.

That being said, it's still inexcusable to trot out Cole for 35 ish minutes as routinely as we do. It's funny, even when Cole has a solid 44-48% night from the field he finishes with less points than shots bc he generally hits zero fts or 3's.
