Jaws was #1 movie in 1975.
Jaws was a phenomenon even though critics panned the book.
Jaws the book is absolutely awful. The movie didn't follow the book very closely (thank god).
I thought the godfather was a fantastic book, better than the movie. The movie follows the book pretty closely iirc, but the book also contains many elements of godfather 2.

Jaws the movie is much improved over the book. The book was not very good.
Ender's Game the movie sucked on every level imaginable.
Stardust was a pretty good iteration of Gaiman's book, although they did change the end.
