well to be honest, women generally create these events, and the mood and setting, a lot of times, do not match the dress code they want.

im not going to bother wearing a tie to your house party where you serve well drinks, have a stinky mutt running around, or invite your hillbilly cousin that is going to show up in a Tshirt and crocs.

I've never been invited to a cocktail event that wasn't actually a cocktail event, but I guess it's different if you're going to the Young Associates Reception at the Metropolitan Opera vs someone's house.

If you don't wear a tie to a cocktail event at the Met Opera then you're a barbarian

edit: actually the truth is that no one would really give a shite. I saw some guys without ties and thought it was an odd choice but that's the extent to which anyone would care

yea, thats what im trying to say. If im going to a formal event where i know everyone will dress properly and the mood and setting will be more refined, ill wear a tie.

but if its the middle of the summer in louisiana and someone is having a cocktail party in their big back yard by the pool just for the sake of getting people together and having fun, im prob not wearing a tie with my suit.
