Do antidepressants really help? What does it feel like when they work? I kinda have a theory that if antidepressants worked, people would be taking them recreationally.

I didn't like them at all.
They made me feel like a different person and they definitely altered my personality. It's hard to describe, how they make you feel, but they essentially make you someone else completely, or they did in my case.

Good question. In my case I think that they've helped to stabilize me, as I said in the OP. I'm still depressed. They haven't fixed that.
Prozac - stabilized (current)
Effexor - horrible side effects
Zoloft - did nothing
Lexapro - did nothing more than Prozac
Wellbutrin - GAVE me panic attacks
Paxil - killed my sex life, couldn't finish
Celexa - did nothing
could be forgetting some. It's been a long time.
