ATL-PHX I'm seeing an average of $335 roundtrip on delta or southwest so even for 2 adults and a child that averages to $1000, you still would've saved $200...

There's tricks as to the best time to book flights to certain locations. It also depends on if you're set on flying certain days of the week. Example: Fridays are almost always more expensive to fly than tuesdays, wednesdays or saturdays.
