Why do I absolutely loathe that collection of wannabe, pretentious, untalented assholes?

They suck. I don't get why people like them.

Agreed, they're the Fall Out Boy of "indie" bands.

I really liked their first two albums
They have a different sound than most acts, at least they did when they were first around, and it's catchy; very Paul Simon-ish.
Their cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Everywhere" is great, too

About 7-8 years ago, the wife and I were in Amoeba records in the Haight Ashbury district in San Fran. It was a Friday night and I was in heaven--on vacation and finding rare LPs galore.
Amoeba is known for having live entertainment while people browse for records. The band that night was some new indie called "Vampire Weekend"--I bought their debut record that night.
A few weeks later, my wife was watching Leno/Conan/Letterman (one of them-I don't remember), and yells to me--"Hey look--it's that Vampire band we saw in the record store playing on Leno/Conan!"
True story.

you can not like the music if that's your taste, but they aren't assholes. They're actually decent guys if you've ever seen any interviews. And to call them talentless, well, I guess you can say that because of how good you are on guitar and the keys? The Iranian guy is extremely talented.

I'm sure you could be right.

I don't like to brag, but . . .
I've just seen them a few times on tv, and their songs sound like little annoying "ditties" sung by a twelve year old.

I don't think they're untalented, I just think they latched onto this little fey, twee style and now they're stuck with it.
Awesome double bill would be Vampire Weekend co-headlining with Black Label Society. The "Rough Trade vs. Twinks" tour.
I wouldn't go but I'd love to hear about it.

Could be true.

Diversity in music is a good thing.

I absolutely love them.
Not sure why.
I feel that their sound is unique.

I don't get Vampire Weekend at all. Just does not sound good to me.

I'm not a huge fan, but you are too harsh. "Step" is one of the best songs put out in recent memory. Just utterly, hauntingly beautiful. Check out this live version which sounds even better than the studio - to me, proving they are neither "wannabe" or "untalented". There's even attention paid to getting a good drum sound which I find often ignored with modern music.

Seriously, their debut album is excellent. It's like a modern-age version of Paul Simon's Graceland.
I wasn't a fan of Contra, but their latest effort was very good. It's ok to not enjoy their music but to say they are "untalented" is ridiculous.

I disagree. Their last album couldn't be more different from their first.

I like them quite a bit and have seen them live a few times.
Rostam recently left the band, which is going to be interesting, because he was pretty integral to their live shows. He was basically controlling half the samples and such that were layed in on the last album and in charge of triggering them and such for the live show.
I find their music to be really, really fun and catchy as hell. It's pretty much just afropop with an indie flair.

I hate A-Punk and Oxford Comma - but The Kids Don't Stand a Chance, Diane Young, and Step are really good.

I don't know. Their first album is pretty damn good.
What do they want to be in your estimation and in what way are they failing?
I could agree with this.
Ha... No.

Rostam? Agreed. He just parted ways with the group but will continue to collab with them.
Their sound can be hit or miss, but regardless of if you like them or not, you can't deny their unique sound. Really nothing else out there like them.
Personally I'm a big fan, but I can see how its not for everyone

I'm a Vampire Weekend fan as much as the next guy but that I don't think "Step" deserves to be regarded as anything more than an acceptable modern setting of Pachelbel's Canon.
