I'm considering buying my first home and looking for advice. I have none of the major items needed for a home such as furniture, decor, appliances. Would it be dumb to buy all this stuff and keep in storage before buying a home that way I won't have to be making mortgage payments while trying to pay for these items? Or wait until after I buy a home?

If that is a concern, save more money before buying baw

I probably wouldn't buy new furniture and put it in storage.

Wait until you buy a house. You don't want to pay storage fees, and you don't want to get stuck with furniture that doesn't match the house.

Depends on the timeframe. A few months, sure. It's good to get everything in a row. That ~$75 a month is worth the lack of headache.

You would have to pay for storage, right?
I would buy house items after you buy the house.
You don't know if what you buy will fit in the house. Sofas can be too big, etc.
My nephew moved and rented his house out and had to leave the sofa that wouldn't fit in the new house.

Buy a less expensive house if that's what it takes to be able to furnish it as well. It's more expensive than you think to fully furnish a home, and there is nothing worse than having too much house and no money left for furniture, appliances, etc.

baby steps
the faster you want shite, the more it costs
estimate what you or the thing that Demands better, want will cost you. Then factor that into your purchase price.
don't over extend yourself on the home and then have to sit in outdated squalor.
If you get an eye for old shite, it's a great time, because a bunch of baby boomers are dying and you can deck your shite out with some pimpass 60's quality.

I'd probably just stash away enough money to buy furniture for after you move in. You never know what's gonna fit where unless you have the house picked out already. When closing on a house, you can usually push the mortgage out to start a few months after closing.

Is there a law that your house has to be fully furnished the day you move in?

Couldn't you just "pretend" to buy all that stuff now by setting a certain amount of money on the side?

you can only buy something before you buy the house if it's:
1. off craigslist
2. from GREAT neighborhood
3. sold dirt cheap
all 3 yes, then grab.
I grabbed a 1920's(lable) dining table with 4 new chairs(3-5 years)....for $100 from a house on LSU lakes.
That IMO is worth it, the other garbage, "I bought 6 years ago for $700, asking $450" frick that!

Affording the house and furnishing it isn't really an issue. I'm not saying I can buy everything all at once but I can afford to buy stuff after. I was mainly thinking along the lines of if I came across a good deal and such. A local appliance store is closing down and selling stuff at good prices.
And my sister has agreed to let me use her basement to keep from paying a storage fee.
