I have been to Caneel Bay once and stayed in a villa twice. Both experiences were great and had their perks.
This summer, I am actually going to the Bitter End Yacht Club in Virgin Gorda. If you stay for a week, it is all inclusive except for alcohol. Included is food, but more importantly all water sports, daily BVI excursions, and use of their fleet of 150 boats. I plan on doing an excursion every single day. Can't wait. I think in total the BVIs are better than the USVIs, but if I had to pick one island only, I would pick St. John without question.

I agree with this statement.
I did spend a week in St. Croix in November and enjoyed it immensely. The local people we met were great and there were some very good restaurants.

If you are in Virgin Gorda, try to run up to Anegada for the day at least once. Totally different island structure. I dont want to get in the weeds about geology (because I will misspeak), but basically most islands are a result of volcanic or tectonic plate collision. Anegada is made up entirely from coral so it is flat.
The charter companies used to prohibit their boats from going there, since the approach is very technical in shallow water. However, I recall there is a charter and at the dock is a beach side bar/restaurant that grills Caribbean lobster.
