Considering both US and British Virgin Islands. We are looking for the most wonderful beaches and the best restaurants the Caribbean has to offer.
Anyone have suggestions?

If you are looking for just 1 island, then St. John is your place. The most beautiful beaches and a number of high quality restaurants.
St. Thomas has some good restaurants but it is not in St. John's league as far as beaches. It is also more commercialized and has more crime.
From a BVI perspective, Tortola and to a lesser extent, Virgin Gorda are the most commercialized. All of the others have very few inhabitants and the only restaurants would be the ones at a resort.
I would recommend St. John by far if you were only going to do 1 island.

Springlake Tiger got it right. St. John is the answer. Rent a house on South side, white sand beaches are on the North side. Fly to St. Thomas, take the ferry to St. John. Pick up your rent car and house keys. Enjoy.

If you end up on St. Thomas, go to the Island View Guesthouse. Great little bed and breakfast built into the mountain with a restaurant on top. It's all outside, and has amazing views of Charlotte Amalie. The menu is limited, but the food is excellent and the ambiance (and the honor bar) make it a pretty unforgettable experience. Make a reservation, because there are only a few tables.
