GSP Training

Looking to train up my 11 month old German shorthaired Pointer. Unfortunately I have not had the time to get her past the basics. I'm looking for someone who has experience with GSPs. I'm not a quail hunter but from what i can tell being with her she won't be a duck dog. I'm willing to start quail hunting (especially if future duck seasons go like this year) . My uncle is big into quail and has been urging me to get her trained. I'd like to stay within 4 hours drive of BR but i also understand i might have to look further than that for good training.
Dog Info:
She is a soft submissive dog with some pretty bad separation anxiety. She will only retrieve dead ducks I bring home and the dummy occasionally if i can get her pumped up. Her prey drive has increased with age and she loves running through the woods and chasing birds or any other animal in some fields we have.
thanks for any suggestions

Daniel Goldsby out of the Independence area does very well with them and retrievers.

This is something I am still working on with my pup. He's with me so much that he sometime has a hard time staying calm when I'm gone. It has gotten much better over the last few months, but it's still a very small issue. Good luck

First of all.... Welcome to the OB, Baw!! This forum has quite an array of useful info/tips that has helped us old baw's for many a moons now.
Regarding your GSP... Sounds like she needs a good ole fashioned whoppin on!!! Head about 60 miles up HWY 61 and I can provide that service! Lol!!! I take cash or check!! Lol!!!

BigHoss sent his pup to a place near Alexandria. FYI, wild quail, besides pen raised, are really not an option in Louisiana...

Aj chicola with majestic kennels did wonders for my gsp.
He is in lecompte up by Alexandria.

I train dogs for duck hunting. Just curious what about your GSP makes you think it wouldn't make a good duck dog?

this is true. I have seen his gsp grab 2 mallards, a woodcock, and a quail on one retrieve...never seen a lab do that

Because most would rather hunt live birds than retrieve dead ones...

True but there are plenty of GSP's used for duck hunting.

I know I tried. You can make them do it, but a majority don't have the heart for it. I learned my lesson...

I use my female every season before I moved out of LA.
OP, send her to Bu Yah Retreivers. JD Babb will have her ready to go in no time.

I sent both of my labs to Bu Yah and they turned out great!

I'll be with JD on a bachelor party in a couple hours. Old friend of mine with a good operation going.

I've known JD for many years myself. We probably know each other
Seriously OP, JD is the way to go.

I as well know JD through some friends. I will for sure have him as a top option. Thanks for all the help!

Honestly man, he's more of a retriever guy. Not saying he can't do it or won't, but the training is different for pointers and there are guys who specialize specifically the breed. Just something to think about.
