Request an itemized statement, they have to give you that if you ask for it.

If you call the billing department of the hospital and complain, they'll like adjust it for you.

I checked again with our benefits department.

This happens all the time. But if the hospital was in the network, the insurance company and hospital already have a contract, and thus an agreed-upon rate for the care, and you owe nothing.

Exactly.

Plaintiff lawyers, medical industry and the government are the sources of our problems. The hospital has to provide service to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Doctors excessively limit competition and push up their fees. Ambulance chasers have doctors and hospitals scared NOT to do every possible test and procedure.

Insurance companies are by far the least guilty party in this circus. They are blamed because ignorant consumers only send them a check and blame them when things go wrong.
