Kick coverage was considerably better at the end of the season. So why the short kicks?

They were getting to the 30/35 on every return anyway. LSU was just trying to prevent a return for a TD.

we didn't do it the whole game. and the times we didn't pooch it our coverage was spot on they were held inside the 20 yd line.

their returner was a burner and we didn't want to give him a chance to bring one to the house. it appears our kicker can't kick it into the end zone.

To be politically incorrect, bad special teams coaching and not recruiting a kicker that can put it out of the end zone.

A Texas Tech fan sitting next to me said their kickoff receiver was top notch, one of the best in the country. So, I took this as the reason for the short kickoffs

Because Tech has a damn good set of return men. Keep it away from them and make sure you are able to cover kick. Good strategy, paid dividends.
