And buy an inexpensive tester. Test for power before removing and replacing.

Had electrical issues last week. Started with the GFCI not resetting after troubleshooting (openings everyfricken outlet in the circuit) and finally getting an electrician out they found a ghetto rigged flying tap between circuits that had burned up in the attic. Installed 2 new junction boxes and $160 later the gfci reset

What was weird was several outlets on the same circuit still worked and the damn breaker never tripped.

All I know is, I've got a contractor replacing a defective one on my balcony today.

I never work on/disassemble electrical without putting the volt meter on it first. I do not rely solely on turning off breakers or switches. I check it before I touch it always. Take nothing for granted.

I've also had cases where another outlet on the same circuit needs to be reset.

This!

I have a GFCI outlet in the garage under the main box. Had to reset it to get both bathrooms to work again.

Check GFCI outlets upstream of the one that wont reset.
check upstream and downstream. both have same effect in series circuits, which is how homes are usually wired.
