You had that one game between #1 Miami and #2 Penn State in 1987 and that was just about it until the mid-90s

Notre Dame vs. West Virginia in 1989.

Oh yeah, and weather. 78 is the high tomorrow and 68 the low in Miami.

But you still had about a decade and a half or so where the average game was Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati.

Went to Bama ND game...

The days leading up to the game, in south beach, were awesome. Partied saw a lot of crazy stuff. Hung out at the beach. Went to Joes Stone Crab.

The day of the game was worlds different. Long trek to stadium in a cab. $90 I think. Tailgated in a parking lot. Waited for hours for the game. Just a completely different scene.

Miami should have built a new stadium near downtown instead of retrofit the current stadium.

I agree with you overall, but there just really isn't any land to build downtown.

Though their NFL/Da U stadium should be closer to Miami itself than Miami Gardens, for sure.

I'm surprised I put Orange. I've always thought Fiesta in terms of prestige, I don't know what I was thinking earlier.

Historically, it's the Orange Bowl by a mile. But during the BCS era, the Fiesta Bowl has had more memorable matchups and games and it's not even close. And that's even with Boise State playing in the game every other year.

Seriously, look at the Orange Bowl matchups in the BCS era. They include:

Florida vs. Syracuse (31-10)
Florida vs. Maryland (56-23)
USC vs. Iowa (38-17)
Louisville vs. Wake Forest (that really happened)
Kansas vs. Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati
Iowa vs. Georgia Tech
Stanford vs Virginia Tech
West Virginia vs. Clemson (the worst BCS game ever played)
Florida State vs. Northern Illinois
Georgia Tech vs. Mississippi State

There have been some okay games (FSU/PSU, Ohio State/Clemson, Michigan/Alabama), but I can't remember anything specific about these games.

And their 4 NC games (Oklahoma/Florida State, USC/Oklahoma, Florida/Oklahoma, Alabama/Notre Dame) were all terrible. 3 of the 4 were disgracefully bad.

Florida-Oklahoma was a pretty damn good game. Two great teams and two Heisman QBs.

I've been to four of the destinations.

The Fiesta was incredible back when it was at Sun Devil. The whole Scottsdale/Tempe scene within walking distance of the stadium (which was beautiful set against the mountains, even if kind of a dump) was sweet as hell. I imagine it being all the way out in Glendale takes away from the atmosphere.

New Orleans has an awesome set up and was probably the most fun I had at any of the games.

Atlanta kind of sucked. They need to do a better job all around of setting that game up.

Miami itself was fun for a mini vacation and there was good energy, but the actual game day was miserable as hell. I would never go back there. The stadium is far away from where anyone not from there wants to be; it's in a dodgy part of town; it's bland as hell with nothing around it; traffic sucks; the people organizing the event were fricking amateurs; you're getting fleeced everywhere you turn. No, thank you.

I've heard the Rose Bowl is a great set up, but I've never been.

They honestly should move the Atlanta game to either Seattle, San Francisco, New York, or somewhere similar.

The Orange Bowl has gone in the tank as a destination. Miami should do much better than that garbage they throw out there.

That's because the Fiesta Bowl stole the Big 12 champion starting with the BCS era. For the longest time the Orange Bowl took the champion of the Big 8/Big 12 and an at-large team.

Just take a look at the match-ups in that game in the 1980s alone.

1981 Orange Bowl: #2 Florida State vs. #4 Oklahoma
1982 Orange Bowl: #1 Clemson vs. #4 Nebraska
1983 Orange Bowl: #3 Nebraska vs. #13 LSU
1984 Orange Bowl: #1 Nebraska vs. #5 Miami
1985 Orange Bowl: #2 Oklahoma vs. #4 Washington
1986 Orange Bowl: #1 Penn State vs. #3 Oklahoma
1987 Orange Bowl: #3 Oklahoma vs. #9 Arkansas
1988 Orange Bowl: #1 Oklahoma vs. #2 Miami
1989 Orange Bowl: #2 Miami vs. #6 Nebraska
1990 Orange Bowl: #1 Colorado vs. #4 Notre Dame

If we're talking destination/area as a whole, I'd say Glendale is just fine. If you're in Ohio, why wouldn't you want to go to Pasadena/LA, Glendale/Phoenix/Scottsdale, New Orleans, or Miami in January? I think all of those places offer lots to do in the area, with New Orleans being the one that stands out with the best things to do right around the stadium. Dallas and Atlanta on the other hand, meh.

Agreed 100%. The answer is obviously very subjective.

The rose bowl is the best combo of football and vacation experience. The fiesta bowl is great for any older fan from a northern state that wants some mild weather and to relax a few days. Sugar and orange bowl will appeal to the younger fan who wants more of a party atmosphere, although I do agree that the orange bowl game has lost almost all it's luster and prestige. Dallas and Atlanta are very meh.
