I don't get why you are saying this? Every Final Fantasy has always borrowed off of others. 9 is just as unique as any other game.
They had a nod to first FF's by having a black mage in it and more cartoonish characters but that is about it.
Nothing about nostalgia is why I like that game. It is just great in almost all factors. Story, World, Characters, Combat System, Ability learning system, Artwork.
The only gripe I really have with the game are the loading times. Also how hard it could be to steal some items.

Most of this thread gives a pretty good overview of the general consensus of the Final Fantasy games. Don't listen to the guy who said FF6 was the "hipster's choice". It's legitimately top 2 in almost everyone's book, and has been for ages. In my opinion it has the best combination of gameplay, story, characters, and music of all the series.
Also, if you can find it give Chrono Trigger a shot. Fantastic game.

Because the reason that game was made was the way it was is because fans wanted them to go back to cystals and a more traditional fantasy oriented story. So they did.

Garland, elemental crystals, recycled music from older games, cloud's sword in a weapon shop that zidane remarks upon. That's just 4 off the top of my head. I know there is tons of stuff in my recent playthrough that I noticed were specific callbacks to previous games that I can't think of right now.
Yes all FF games reuse things to a degree, but not to the extent IX did.
