They all said we couldn't afford anyone else and at least we would have an asset that we can get something back for..
1) We couldn't, we signed him with Bird Rights, not cap space.
2) Who said the 2nd part of your statement? There was a lot of talk and concern about how big his deal should be, and other than a Bird Writes article saying his salary was ranked fine considering how overpaid the position is in general, most people immediately didn't like the size and length of the deal.

We could have afforded Bioymbo who I wanted much more than Asik. I think we wouldn't have been able to get Gee and maybe someone else, but you could have overpaid AA for two years rather than give Asik 5 years if you absolutely needed to get to the cap.
Resigning Asik wasn't awful in and of itself, overpaying him wasn't that bad, but overpaying him for 4 years was ridiculous. Should be a fireable offense. He should have been signed to 1-2 yrs guaranteed with an extra year guaranteed for injury only.
ETA -looked back and it appears we had cap room to sign Bioymbo, Gee, and Cunningham if we had let Asik walk and maybe Babbit with the room exception.
