Employees at Bud's Broiler in Mid-City fought off a would-be armed robber who was eventually arrested by police Sunday night (Dec. 6).

New Orleans police said the man, identified as 43-year-old Ismael "Mike" Naranjo, walked in the restaurant, at 500 City Park Ave., shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday. He implied he was armed, police said, and walked behind the counter to take money from the register.

But employees of the restaurant attacked the man, police said, and he drove off in a 1996 white Dodge pickup truck.

Bud's general manager, Melvin Ziegler, said there was at least one other customer in the restaurant at the time. The would-be robber waited for that customer to order, Ziegler said, before placing a hood over the head to try to conceal his face.

"It must have been his first time," Ziegler said of the suspect. "He wasn't very smart."
