Yes, even via gun violence

quote:

Compared with 1993, the peak of U.S. gun homicides, the firearm homicide rate was 49% lower in 2010, and there were fewer deaths, even though the nation’s population grew. The victimization rate for other violent crimes with a firearm—assaults, robberies and sex crimes—was 75% lower in 2011 than in 1993. Violent non-fatal crime victimization overall (with or without a firearm) also is down markedly (72%) over two decades.

*ETA: "you" is based on estimated age based on demographics.

Oh the 90s were fricking terrifying compared to today. And then, just when we get out of them, the Towers get knocked down.

What if you broke down those homicides by other demographics though?

quote:

A disproportionate share of gun homicide victims are black (55% in 2010, compared with the 13% black share of the population). Whites were 25% of victims but 65% of the population in 2010. Hispanics were 17% of victims and 16% of the population in 2010.

Look, let's be honest. I respect your intellect.

LBJ's "Great Society" and the war on Drugs are responsible for this.

70's were pretty awesome, but shite like fighting didn't necessarily result in a criminal charge like it does today.

Media has scared the crap out of people today, we've got freaking gated communities.

I wonder if there is any correlation with the drop and the Brady law passed in 1993 that started background checks?

Probably mandatory sentencing more than anything. Or, maybe we just aren't as violent as we used to be because life is so much easier.

nope. CDC did a study

the AWB didn't do anything and violence continued to drop after the AWB ended

Bill Clinton is such an underrated president.

ETA: I'm not saying he had much to do with the decline whatsoever, but nearly every metric we would equate to quality of life improved during his presidency. Republican, democrat, who gives a shite - he presided over what may have been the greatest 8 years this country has ever seen. Whether he was responsible for that or not is up for debate, but give the man some credit.

TL:DR
"Four factors appear to explain the drop in crime: increased incarceration, more police, the decline of crack and legalized abortion. Other factors often cited as important factors driving the decline do not appear to have played an important role: the strong economy, changing demographics, innovative policing strategies, gun laws and increased use of capital punishment."
