re: Can Star Wars TFA break opening weekend record without a summer month debut?

It was actually brilliant to do it in December. With the comic book craze it was best to stay away from the summer. And like someone else said, December movies do great. Look at Titanic and Lord of the Rings.
As long as it's in late December, movies usually do well. Kids are out for Christmas Break by then.

Titanic and Avatar both opened in December. Neither of them posted record breaking weekends but went on to become the highest grossing movies of all-time.
This will happen. Won't break opening weekend. It'll finish third highest grossing all time if it's mediocre or bed shitting.
Will possible climb to 1 all time only if it's a great story/movie like winter soldier style living up to the hype.

I think I saw Rogue One or one of the future Star Wars movies is scheduled for a summer release but I think it would be smart on their part to claim December and let Marvel and DC fight over summer.
