We are going to Costa Rica for Thanksgiving and have At&t as our service. What should we do in order to still have access to the phone? I'm sure I can get AT&T to add an international package for a few days for $20 or so, but is there anything that will keep my costs down? Can I make calls using WhatsApp? Please help, rookie international traveler here!

Yes, AT&T will let you put international on your account for the month, just remember to cancel it when you get home. If you have wifi, then WhatsApp will work. My father in law used it to keep in touch with us when he went to Japan and it worked fine.

Screw AT&T and their international plan.... total joke...
Easier to jailbreak your phone and buy a chip at the airport.....

I used the Talkatone app once to call my Dad mainly to see if it worked well...it did. We got lucky though and the hotel we stayed at for the beginning and end of our trip offered free international calls so we just called our parents from the hotel to let them know we arrived safely.
Also kept my phone on airplane mode the entire trip and only used wifi.
I did have a friend go to CR and she just used her phone like she normally would....yeah she got a $300 phone bill the next month.

I ended up calling them and here's the deal. THey will charge you a $30 monthly fee in order to use the phone internationally which includes unlimited text messages. In addition, they will charge $1/min for any phone calls.
We will be using WhatsAPP and facetime instead of paying them that much money.

Call AT&T, they have a few different packages that only run for ONE MONTH, there is no need to cancel anything. The issue with them is you get basically no internet with any of the available packages. It is worth it for the free texting and discounted calls IF you are going to be there a while. It is a waste of money for a long weekend though.
You could would go with the wifi option the other poster mentioned, myself I would go with the phone turned off and in my suitcase option. It is a vacation, unplug for a bit

That is the package you chose, $60 gets you the same but $.50 a min and more internet.
I travel out off the country several times a month for work and have used each package they have. They all suck if you are going to use your phone, and is why I now am a T-Mobile customer.

Did the 100 dollar plan when I went overseas since I knew I would be gone 2 weeks. was assured it had enough internet for what I wanted to do.
In 3 days of using my phone for GPS I was over the limit on internet. Ended up buying a phone in Europe to use for the rest of my duration.

I don't even care if I can talk or text anyone back home when on a trip.
I suppose I'd care if I left kids behind or something
Just buy a cheap burner phone or sim and be done with it. Just want to be able to use gps, call a guide or something like that

Yep, if you are a person who travels outside the US very often AT&T is the absolute worst of the majors.
I gave up some coverage out in the sticks back home but gained the world with T-Mobile.
