Sample packs are certainly a great way to get started. There are several cigars that I buy boxes of now that I would have never tried if I had not run across them in a sample pack.

A good quality, decent value MILD cigar is the 5 Vegas GOLD. It's a little too mild for my taste, but a good smoke. I like a medium to full bodied smoke.
My goto smokes are Hoyo de Monterrey - Black Nights.
Padron are very good smokes too.
