You guys are highly discounting the factor of nutrition in this equation. My aunt raises deer. The effects of a diet high in protein, calcium, and magnesium will turn the scrawniest of bucks into very respectable bucks in no time.

the only 2 things you can control when growing bucks:
1. Nutrition
2. Allowing them to live to maturity
Genetics play a part and you will never change that on free range deer
