Butch Jones did pretty well following Kelly at both CMU and Cincy. But prior to that, Urban Meyer going from Bowling Green to Utah was probably the most successful jump. That was way prior to the Pac 12 too, so maybe the jump from MAC to power conference is too steep. The most successful recent coaches have all gone to an intermediate step in between.

I almost mentioned Urban and Butch, but Urban left for Utah over a decade ago and Butch was helped by what Kelly had built at CMU and Cincy. Like you said though, I think the jump straight from the MAC to the P5 might be too much, too soon.
