Figured.
I didn't think they would let Lowe go. He knows his shite.

But can they keep the sports people once their contracts are up? I'd imagine everybody is pissed at them.

Jon Miller thinks ESPN kept it around to prove they did not need Simmons.
An interesting thought, but now we know for sure they needed him. At least before, ESPN had cover that it didn't matter, it was a bad idea.

what a crying shame
simmons built something smart and well written, devoid of clickbait and hot takes, and they killed it
i didnt ever really read the culture stuff, but the baseball/basketball/college football writing on that site is/was the best ive read
they had zach lowe, jonah keri, kirk goldsberry, andrew sharp, holly anderson, matt hinton, etc, etc, etc
frick

Holly Anderson is going after Jim Miller on Twitter right now.
I loved their podcasts. Watch the thrones and Hollywood prospectus were awesome.

Can all those talented young writers but keep tired old lame hacks like Skip Bayless and Leather Berman. Makes perfect sense.

I get what she's saying but that's kinda his job and it's not like he was just carrying the ESPN higherup's water, he was saying they were fricking up.

I loved everyone I worked with at G and loved what we built. Watching good/kind/talented people get treated so callously = simply appalling.

I agree. Can't say I blame her though. Gotta be a rough day.

Some dude said they told the staff 1 minute before they sent out the press release.

Sweet...has to mean Lowe goes to HBO.

This.
I loved that they were the antithesis of what ESPN has become in the era of First Take. Whereas ESPN was nothing but a bunch of bloviating gas bags doing hot take drive-bys with myopic, prisoner of the moment vantage points, Grantland provided in-depth, reasoned coverage of sports and its nuances with regard to contracts and schematics.
It's no coincidence that the only recent original content ESPN has done -- Grantland and 30-For-30 -- have been either destroyed or completely watered down.
Heck, even College GameDay, which used to be fantastic, is now nothing more than a less terrible version of First Take with Tom Rinaldi sob stories interspersed throughout.

Cancel that Lowe Post, @coachthorpe. Tuesday column was gonna be fun, too. Return of the 10 Things I Like and Don't Like!
How depressing for someone of Lowe's talents at writing and analysis.

The only issue is that he failed to protect them. The idea that he has no culpability in this event is ridiculous. He quit over relative pennies after hiring these guys for his prestige project. Actions have consequences, and here, Bill's hard line stance cost these guys their jobs.
