In this day and age, especially if you have older kids who drive back and forth from school, it's unrealistic to expect them to not have them at all in school IMO.
No offense, but why would you say that? Many of us drove just fine back and forth to school without a cell phone.

There are a lot of things from the past that people think were "just fine", but you know what? Times change. I agree that the phone should remain off and not be allowed in class, but people's resistance anything different than what "they had" is eye-rolling stupid. Many parents whose children drive to school prefer them to own a cell phone. Deal with it.
If we just sat around and never embraced anything new, we'd be quite a stupid bunch, don't you think? I'm sure there were plenty of things you had/did when you were younger than your parents and grandparent "did fine" without. That is a silly thing to say.

You were probably also within walking distance of a pay phone if you broke down in a city area or lived in a town small enough that you'd feel comfortable stopping to help a kid broke down then. If the cell phone is available for them to carry back and forth to school, as someone who works in education and we're responsible for those kids until they walk through their door, I have no issue with that.
Things have changed unfortunately.
