The problem here isn't hiring a retread. It was hiring a retread because of some over-reaction to how poor the offense was. It's also hiring a guy that's style won't work with significant pieces on your team already.
This goes back to the issues Demps had with Monty. He gets Monty guys that don't fit his style or system and then when they suck, people just attack Monty.
No Monty deserved a ton of blame, because he was atrocious with rotations, and seemingly made little sense with his scheming given the players he had, plus his history of pushing out talented players that he just didn't like.
That all said, this path taken by the Pelicans FO has been proven in tons of sports to fail at getting the predicted results. You can't suck at one end of the court and then expect to hire a guy that is "great" on that end but sucks on the other end, and figure it will magically even out.
Also, it is tough to say anything right now given all the injuries the team is dealing with.

Pelican offense was top 10 it was the defense that was terrible.
