But given the large-scale exoplanet observations we are doing anyway, perhaps it's time to start thinking about how to think about the whole alien thing. David Grinspoon, the Library of Congress Chair in Astrobiology, put it succinctly when he told me:
"Lots of astronomers have been discussing all the possibilities for the light curve pretty responsibly. But some are really up in arms at even the mention of aliens. I think that's a mistake. Clearly, some things are more probable than others. But we have to learn how to handle these things [and] how to not to handle them."

Typical NPR hack piece, but it's true holier than thou scientists need to start giving credence to ETI presence.

when I see aliens, I'll believe in aliens

The possibility of encountering aliens is highly unlikely, but I agree, it would be good to at least have plans and protocol in place if an encounter were to happen.

I agree. They might not like being laughed at.

There's already a process in place...

Here's What Happens If Intelligent Life Is Discovered
(Includes interviews with Seth Shostak and Jill Tarter.)
If all signs indicate that the signal is coming from another star, the astronomers contact other observatories or research organizations that subscribe to the Post-Detection Protocols to confirm a) that the signal exists, and b) that it’s likely coming from an intelligent source. If the other groups confirm the the signal, the original astronomers sound the alarm, alerting their national authorities of the discovery and sending an International Astronomical Union “telegram”—these days, an email—to observatories around the world. The guidelines also account for the United Nations’s 1967 Space Treaty, which calls for member states to notify the U.N. of their space-exploration activity—under the Protocols, the discovering astronomer alerts the Secretary General to the discovery, as well as a number of other international bodies.

Okay.
But only because I, for one, accept our new insect overlords

Didn't they just have something come out about diversifying our intergalactic message we broadcast?

All I know is that if there are aliens out there, they're probably no more advanced than we are or they would have found us by now.

They probably have and weren't interested enough to stop. Do you stop to say hello to fire ant mounds?

Well we live in a fairly young star system so odds are they are way more advanced than us.
