Took my 4 yr old last year. We had snacks and Nintendo DS. Made an evening hunt and got in the stand about 4 and saw a few does. He begged me to shoot one but I took it as a good opportunity to show him we don't need the meat so let's not waste and just enjoy watching. He had a blast and we went a few times after but seems each time he was less and less patient.

Main advice I ca give is bring them on a comfortable day, lots of snacks, and entertainment ( cell phn, hand held games) and bring your patience. I had to imagine it as an adventure and not a hunt. Greatest adventure to date as a father

Anyone have a good brand for a portable ground deer blind? Looking to bring my 6 year old daughter with me a few times this year and would likely just use a ground blind for us.

Gotta keep it fun for them. Snacks are very important. iPad works with my 8 year old. Don't be a noise or movement nazi. Go into it knowing it will take extra patience. Soak it up. It's a blast. When they are ready to leave, pick up and leave. This is their hunt.

I don't pack electronics for my now 6 yo. He is good for a couple or three hours with a pair of binos. This year I'll pack a pencil and paper and make a checklist of things he can check off he has spotted.

Deer, squirrel, woodpecker, oak tree, acorns, hickory, cypress.....etc. He loves stuff like that.

My 4 yo goes his first time this year. It may be a diff story with him. I'll prob make his first a duck hunt with Mom and brother. Mom can shoot, so I'll just watch the boys.

My son is only 5 months old and I literally think about us getting out in the woods together on a daily basis

I started taking mine when he was 2. Box stands with heaters and electronics and such is not exactly hard on them. He's loved it from the get go. At almost 8 he has killed several deer and rarely if ever uses his ipod/my phone or whatever in the stand. He sits and watches. Saturday I took him bow hunting with me for the first time. Had a ground blind set up. About 30 minutes in I whip out the phone to check some scores, post in the IST etc. He gave me hell for not paying attention, lol. About an hour later he nods off and puts his head in my lap. Right after that 3 does come out at 15 yards and I couldn't shoot. I'm trying to nudge him awake so I can draw. He aint budging. Finally I slither out from under him and try to draw. He falls out the chair. This causes the deer to scatter. They re-appear about 5 minutes later about 30 yards out and I miss the fattest one. First deer I've missed with a bow in quite a while. I tried to blame it on him but he told me I needed to practice more. Hunting with kids is more fun to me than hunting by myself. I didn't think that would be possible. Youth season opens Saturday. I don't know who is more excited, me or him. Good times

I don't know about the ipad/iphone method. Seems to defeat the purpose. Wonder how our dads got us into the woods? Must've had more patience? I turn my phone off when hunting, always bring it for emergencies, but when I settle into a stand or blind, the phone goes off. I've taken my son since he was 3, now 6. We bring a gun and do a lot of walking, looking for tracks, checking out every ditch, throwing sticks and rocks in the river. Yea, i know, that's not hunting but we call it hunting and he loves it. To each his own, but ipads and movies in the deer stand or blind seem silly...
