You're argument amounts to "I wanted pizza, and got a really crappy pizza, but it's still pizza." The classic pizza defense.
It's true.
When a pizza is good, it's pretty damn awesome and you'll remember it forever. That was the case with the originals.
When a pizza is bad, it's still decent to good but not something that keeps popping up in your head. That was the case with the prequels as I got a rough idea of what the republic looked like and I was throughly entertained. Something is better than nothing.
The prequels are not a total net loss like some hardcore fanboys would have you believe and I'm saying this someone who recognizes and validates the originals as far superior to the prequels. The prequels just get a lot of unnecessary hate, that's all.

No, I don't think they get unnecessary hate. The films aren't cogent and basically disregard characterization and narrative. That doesn't invalidate the cool stuff each of them had, but it sure makes you wonder what a cogent prequel trilogy could have been like.
Lucas knew the narrative was inherent, because the outcome was already known. Given this, it appears that he sacrificed characterization for the sake of the cool stuff or the beautiful visuals. What we wanted was a film that explored a backstory which a lot of people were invested in. What we got was a film that made that backstory seem utterly idiotic. But again, there was cool stuff in it.

No, no it's not. In many cases.
There are plenty stories, books, movies, video games, etc. where the backstory is hinted at but not explicitly spelled out. There is nothing wrong with leaving some things to the imagination.

It was pure laziness. Lucas has admitted in documentaries that he switched to CGI due to the difficulties of building multiple sets. Not only that but he thought it was going to become an industry standard after he revolutionized it with Phantom Menace.
