Anyone receive a notice from La Dept of Public Safety about their car insurance?

I haven't lived in Louisiana for 15 years and my dad just got a letter from LDPS saying that I need to show proof of insurance as of November 2001 or pay a fine plus interest of $576.
I haven't lived in Louisiana in 15 years and I sold the car they want proof of insurance on 10 years ago.
Little bit of legwork my dad did he found out that hundreds of thousands of these letters were sent out to anyone that even switched insurance carriers.
Anyone receive one of these letters? I'm tempted to tell them to go pound sand but they had some language in the letter that makes me feel like I need to chase this down.

Apparently they just decided to enforce this or something because I received the same letter yesterday. Never had a lapse in insurance but I moved to TX in 2012, registered my truck, and changed my insurance coverage to TX.
Called LA OMV today and they said they do not have record of it and basically told me to pay up. It is my responsibility to make sure LA OMV was notified when I changed the state my vehicle was registered in.
Frustrating when you pay insurance, pay registration fees, and think you are doing the right thing only to be blindsided by a $525 fine for something 3 years old.

I got the same thing for a motorcycle I cancelled insurance on 2 years because it doesn't run. Apparently I was supposed to turn in the plate within 10 days. I was not aware of this, and now apparently owe $525.

I started the other thread. So has anyone gotten this resolved? Since they blasted this so widely, my guess is they are just trying to see if they can wrangle some dollars in the door using scare tactics. I can't imagine they can actually collect on what appears to be 10+ year old "debts" for some of us. I don't live in Louisiana, have the car in question, have a LA license or any cars registered there currently. If the worst case is that I can't ever get a license in LA until it's cleared up, I am just fine with that.

Not yet. I haven't been able to get through to anyone on the phone at the OMV. 95% of the time I get a message that states all phone lines are busy.
The one time I have gotten through I have sat on hold for over an hour.

Yeah, to resolve it you pay the fine. The media did a story a while back about how DPS has millions in uncollected fines and made them look bad, so this is the result.

12 years ago I moved to Texas and got a Texas license and insurance. My dad called and told me he got the same letter. I am not going to pay a fine plus interest for a lapse in insurance that did not happen.

They called me about it and you just give them credit card information to pay the fine and you give then your social for confirmation and you're done. It's pretty easy.

no jail time just going to take it out of your state taxes if not paid.

Yeah they'll garnish state tax refund. Part of new office of debt recovery.
