what a frickin scam ! they sent out letters to people who didn't really owe anything hoping they would pay anyway. And some people actually did. They should be treated like all the other scammers.

And Edmonson stated a second round of letters will be sent for unpaid tickets next!

What I don't get is why this isnt addressed at registration. About 10 years ago I was blocked from either registration or getting a drivers license renewed (I forget which) because the dealer I sold a car to never turned in the license plate and the registration change in the state thought I was driving it without insurance. But they blocked my fairly quickly so I was able to find my documentation and handle it.

I had a letter from them in mailbox yesterday when I got home from the office and was immediately pissed off. Turns out it was for renewing my driver's license. Lucky me

well, i mean when your state government is fricking people out of money they don't even owe, you tend to get a little on edge.

This is a state scam because I filled out and sent in their original form via certified mail, with all proper documentation. I moved out state 6 years ago and switched everything with zero lapse in insurance coverage and mailed my plates in. I know the person residing in my old house in LA and he sent me the original form and now he just sent me this one! for $525! I have tried calling 10 times already.
I'm going to fill out the affidavit form and send in all required documentation if I can find it. I don't know what is going to happen to all the people who have no idea about it and thought they took care of it.
Once I send in the affidavit, is there any way to confirm people actually did their job?
What a joke LA is. Makes me never want to move back.

They sent out a million of them.
We got one and found the paperwork and the insurance company issued something to the state to correct it. We got a letter yesterday from the state saying that it had been dismissed. We don't have to pay.

I found this email address on the OVM site, InsuranceInquiry@LA.GOV. I emailed them, since I'm out of state and the phone lines were swamped. Within a couple of hours, I got a response. I was able to attach my documentation to the email reply and it was cleared in a matter of minutes. I highly recommend emailing them.

Maybe if you shitbags obeyed the law you wouldn't be dealing with this now...

This is what we did but we still got the letter from Round 2. So either A) the Insurance company didn't do what they said they were going to do B) The insurance company sent the proof but not fast enough to beat out round 2 of letters or C) The OMV just didn't process what insurance sent them and really has no reason to care and dismiss anything.
I am off today and have been calling the number all day and can not get through.

Update: Finally got through around 4:15, was on hold for nearly 30 minutes and a woman (who was actually nice) helped us get it fixed. We had to email her the letter from our insurance company but she says it is fixed and we should get a letter soon. Fingers crossed.
