What's truly interesting is that it's not just one kind of movie. We're seeing slasher films (You're Next), haunted houses (The Conjuring), possession (Mama), demon stories (Sinister), psychological (The Guest), horror-comedy (John Dies at the End), classic remakes (Evil Dead), and even Gothic throwbacks (Crimson Peak). It's not just found footage films or copies of one popular film. It's really a fun time for horror fans.
Bingo. Just an awesome time.

I also believe The Babadook is terrible.
Too much of a downer ending in terms of it being a legit threat?

John Dies at the End)
I watched this movie one night on my phone in bed when I was having trouble sleeping. Picked it at random to just try to pass the time.
Ended up staying up watching the whole thing. It was awesome.

The ending is quite uplifting, I thought. No, my biggest problem with the film is that its not scary. Like, not even a little bit. It's a horror movie made for people who don't like horror movies but want a movie title than drop into conversation to show off their sophisticated taste.
Also, the sound mixing on that movie was clearly done by a person who was unable to hear the soundtrack he was mixing. Just an incompetently done botch job, and for a technical genre like horror, incompetent technique is a death blow (Low production values is no problem, incompetence is a big one).
