If a player is 50% owned it means half the entries have that player. so you do not gain an advantage. If you can find a player 1-5% owned that puts up the same numbers then you gain an advantage over almost the entire field. Now obviously there are times where you need to have an highly owned player because he will go off. Many thought Freeman would be that guy last week but under 20% owned him. This week he got a boost in salary.

That's the key. It's easy to say "fade the guys who are too highly owned" but, if that guy goes off and you don't have him, then half the league just got a huge advantage on your team. So, as mentioned in the quote, you have to be smart about when to not select the players you think will be highly owned.
