what happens if the running back loses his helmet while running? does he have to immediately fall down so as not to participate anymore?
The refs will blow the play dead as soon as the helmet comes off, and the ball is spotted at the point where the helmet came off.

what happens if the running back rips the facemask off of his helmet while running? does he have to immediately fall down so as not to participate anymore? Can he move away from the defender's severed hand?

The rule as it pertains to line play is grossly unfair. Is a lineman supposed to disengage and let an end light up the quarterback because he gets his helmet ripped off. I don't think the solution was well thought of in that specific case. How exactly does transferring the risk from one guy to another helping player safety?

I'm more worried about a blocker losing his helmet and stopping, allowing our QB to get crushed.
