one could argue that social smokers are worse because they aren't chemically dependent on their cigs.

It's considered trashy because of the campaign to stop it due to the health risks. In the 50's, it wasn't trashy to smoke. Now, it's considered to be the people who are too stupid to realize the risks are the ones still smoking. Those who tend to make all the other bad decisions in life are still making the bad decision to smoke. But one could argue that the occasional (I'm talking 4 or 5 cigarettes a month) smoker really isn't increasing their health risk all that much. If they weren't addictive, maybe we never really would have had the whole anti smoking campaign in the first place. I just feel like it would be exponentially more acceptable if it wasn't addictive.
