How many days a week do you think an average male should do upper body weight training?

You can lift every day, as long as you're alternating muscle groups and not going to failure every set, every day. I mean, I've done it for months at a time and made gains week over week. It is probably not a terribly efficient use of time, but the best way to get hypertrophy.
On the other hand, I think 4 days (maybe 5) a week is probably optimal - particularly once you get out of your 20s as you feel better working out and have more energy to hit it hard if you're not going every...single...day. The fewer days you work, the more intensity is required at each workout. Conversely, the more days you work, the more of a struggle it is to make every workout count.
In the end it will vary from individual to individual - some guys can get by lifting a long session 2 or 3 days per week. Other guys need more volume to get past plateaus - and those guys will need more days for that volume.

Training for a marathon so running (cardio) 6 days a week even if it's just a short 3 miler. Because of that I've cut my weight training down to just 4-5 days a week. Just try to hit every body part at least once just to try and maintain some muscle mass with all the running.
