When LSU has the ball
Khan Jr.: Keep feeding Fournette until you have to throw the ball. Forget about any criticisms about being conservative in the second half against Mississippi State. LSU won the game, bottom line. Auburn isn't lighting up the scoreboard right now, so there is no sense in going away from a strength until Auburn proves it can stop it or LSU falls behind.
this last part is important. LSUs system only works when LSU has a lead, but it has become quite common for that lead to slowly evaporate. Then when LSU has fallen behind, they decide to (predictably) start passing the ball.
Whats the point? this years LSU team cannot simply rely on doing just enough to get by. the offense must keep defenses honest by being more balanced the entire four quarters, not just building a lead early and then relying on amazing defensive play. they simply do not have the numbers on defense like in years past.
LSUs running game is so powerful that the offense can afford incomplete pass on 1st down, still get 4-6 yards on a run play on 2nd down, thus keeping harris in 3rd and manageable situations.

They are batting 1.000 so far.

this is huge. jennings had no chance last year with all those 3rd and 7's

But why not just run on first down? LSU averaged over 5 yards per 1st down rush.
So, on average you are setting up for a 2nd and 5 (without first down penalties).
If those stats Continue there is very little reason to throw on first down frequently. I'm not saying to never do it.

and also having an inability to throw the ball 5-15 yards.
anything less than 5 or more than 15 though...

and I am not saying always do it. But how many first downs did we run vs pass? iirc the 1st negated TD was on first down, but other than that maybe 3 (?) first down passes on 16 first downs.

It doesn't work that way, one nice gain of 17 yards means you have three or four plays of minimal gains on three or four other plays, you don't move the chains on average gains. We didn't have drives in the last half we punted a lot.

That would mean we pass on nearly 20% of 1st downs.

pass on 1st down?
Does not compute.

LSU should fire Les Miles for having a second job.

and run on 80%...
I am not demanding LSU throw it every first down, but they need to at least make defenses respect the pass. did miss st ever have fewer than 8 men in the box?

I think 20-25% is enough to make a team respect it. Our identity is to line up and run the ball. Not to mix it up on 1st down.

throwing on 3rd and long everytime is not conducive to high % of 3rd down conversions IMO. the defenses will pin their ears back on every 3rd down until harris shows he can throw the ball downfield and hit receivers.

they lose half the time.
next question.

Obviously not. Once again I'll ask, did Miss St ever have fewer than 8 in the box?

for a few plays. i'd guess not very many though.

Throwing the ball more doesn't necessarily mean a team won't stack the box. They may decide they'd rather give up 250 yards passing than 300 yards rushing and a 15 minute time opf possession differential.
