My TDI Jetta w/ manual transmission waverages 53mpg from BR to Nola In the morning and 49mpg from NOLA to BR in the evening.
If you back it down to about 60mph it will do 60mpg on the right day.
And it hauls arse for being a little economy car. It's no tire burner or anything, but it will scoot.

I've got the DSG transmission. I hit the 40k mark and it needed servicing, the dealership quoted $500 for transmission alone. Needless to say I learned to service it myself with a quickness.

try bumping that up to 100 mph and watch the savings roll in
