I agree wholeheartedly. He's tried losing weight before, but he usually just bails after a couple of weeks.
Every now and then I would get him to go workout with me but he never really seemed to break past the "newby" stage.

At 25 there really is no excuse, and it only gets harder.
First thing would be realize that there is no gimmick...there's no "diet" that's going to make you drop 100 pounds.
It's math...that's all. Burn more gas than you put in the tank.
The biggest issue for me was that even though I instinctively knew this and was eating really good food, without counting things and being precise I'd eat more than I needed. When the math is on the wrong side, you need to really work hard to move the needle. When it isn't, things are easier.
Best thing to do would be to get used to being what I call American Hungry. Not really hungry like people who are starving...but American Hungry, where you could eat something now but you know you have a meal coming in a few hours so you could just wait until then if you wanted to. Until he can be ok with being a little hungry all the time and understanding that's normal, he'll have a rough go of it. After that, it's all about the effort he puts in.
But seriously...at 25 is the time to do that shite. If I had a tie machine I'd beat the ever living shite out of 25 year old me before I'd do anything worthwhile for humanity with the damn thing.
