Thinking about giving away my GSP

We love her to death but it's gotten to that point. I've had dogs my whole life and never even contemplated giving one away so this is difficult. She tore a couch up when she was a pup (she is 4 now) and we overlooked it and went and bought a new couch. Since then she stays in a kennel during the day but has recently started getting out and tearing up my 2 year old's toys. I know it's our fault but since the baby came we don't have time to exercise her like she needs and I'm not going to buy another $4000 dollar couch the next time she gets bored with or can't find a toy to chew into 1000 pieces. What makes it more difficult is she is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever owned and has never met a stranger I just think she would be a better fit for someone who is active or has other dogs for her to play with (we have a cavalier spaniel but she won't go near the gsp). I'm torn up about it but feel like giving her to someone is the best thing for us and her.

Yeah man, life sucks right now but my guy is telling me it's the right thing to do, for all of us. The selfish part of me wants to keep her because I've never been without a "big" dog and if I let her go I know I won't get another dog until my daughter is a couple years older when I'll have more time to train a new pup and not worry about one jumping all over her

As long as you give her away to someone you know will work her and take care of her it will make it a little easier.

My GSD was like this. I zip tie her kennel shut with reusable ties. Any time she is out and about, she knows damn well not to tear anything up or she will get sprayed by some Bitter Apple. You need to buy some bitter apple and spray her when she does wrong. It is an amzing product.

She is fine when we are with her. I mean she is hyper but never gets into anything. Its when she gets out and is alone that she tears shite up. For now she will have to live in the backyard while we are at work until I can find someone that wants her and will take good care of her.
She shredded two of my little girl's books and destroyed a few more toys today. Now that she knows she can get out of the kennel it's been happening more frequently to the point I can't let it go on any more. Now my concern will be her digging out of the yard and disappearing.

Luckily my GSP has a young Lab to play with. And a big high school field to run in each night. They are definitely high energy dogs.

I knew that going in as I reasearched for about 6 months before I pulled the trigger on getting her but that was pre-baby and that changes everything.
I've even thought about getting another dog so she would have a companion but worry about that compounding the problem.
Man this sucks

I had to wait to post be reading your story floods me with several intense emotions. My GSP doesn't care for our 1 year old. He gets pissy about not getting attention, but we make time for him. It's a responsibility we took on when we got a GSP. (So did you) They are weird dogs and certainly not labs. Please make it work with your dog. Just know it's not the dog's fault it's yours. If you give away your GSP now, please never get another one.

I hear every word and totally agree. Its 100% out fault and I don't take the responsibility of having a dog lightly I just don't know what more we can do at this point. And if we do or don't give her away, I'll never get another GSP as long as I live.

Why is she in a kennel all day?
Posted on 9/9/15 at 6:14 pm to CoachChappy
Because she tears shite up when we aren't home. She has destroyed a couch and countless toys so far. I'm going to put her in the back yard starting tomorrow but I'm afraid she will dig her way out.

Are you in BR? If so, I may know a way to help.

I'm in prairieville. Whatcha got? I'm willing to try damn near anything

Mine stays in the backyard and has never gotten out. He is not an escape artist type.

Dog whisperer...
I'm semi-joking. Surely there is some obedience training that could help? I personally would have to try before giving the dog away.
But giving the dog to a good home at this age isn't the worst idea, if it's your last resort.

I may be interested if you're still giving her away. I've got two fenced acres for her to run
