I was a straight dumbass when I was 9 and I knew the difference.
So did Junior so maybe let this one drop so everybody else seems to be willing to let bygones be bygones.

How old is he? 9? And he used the word in a sentence with United and College Fund and they pulled him out of class?
Or did he just ask the question out of the blue?
Was this in Spanish class?

It's not the schools job to teach your son the difference dipshit. How about you try partaking in your sons education.

So your racist kid said something racist at school and then lied to you about it to pit you against the school and you fell for it.

I am basing my responses on the theory that the OP.s kid merely asked a simple question, not being a smartass.
My opinion is the teacher over-reacted, b/c he/she, coming from her own perspective, found the word offensive.
I would hope the OP would not be confrontational, but would merely want information.
Of course, in a public school environment, he's wasting his time.

regardless, the fact is, that is no longer an acceptable word to use in our society
Seeing as how over the past 100 years or so, the terms "negro", "colored", "people of color" (that one is back in vogue now), "Afro-american" "african-american" (although for the life of me I can't find "African-America" on a map), "black" and other terms have fallen in and out of "acceptable use"...it's not out of the realm of possibility that it would come back around as a "reclaimed" term. There's nothing inherently wrong with a simple color descriptor.

Serious question. What and what not is it supposed to connote? It literally means "black". Other than being archaic, there's not really supposed to be any virulence behind the word, right?
This would be clever if it weren't so tired. Words are infused with meaning by history, people, and what we call language. The word itself is entirely benign (again, I'm a Spanish speaker and was called that in good faith in Latin America). But people who use it here do so to make a point. And that speaks volumes about how they view their place in the world (and others by proxy).

Because that's how the word is viewed as. A simple color descriptor
You're a peculiar guy

Negro, outside its use in titles and other proper nouns, was not in vogue when I was in elementary school 28 years ago. I was well familiar with the term and what it did and didn't connote, but I never heard it once in school--in 1987.
I may be going crazy, but it's almost as if the kid was trying to understand what the word "Negro" means, as it relates to the proper name of a scholarship.

Just like the pilots on The Brink. Cool. Our sailors and naval aviators need the best quality stuff to remain vigilant.

Aye, there's the rub. What's the "point"? If the point is to point how how PC terms seem to change with the tide, (UNCF, the negro league, etc.) I think it's valid. And if someone Really views blacks as inferior, then whether they call them a grimbygoo or a nonnywomper or whatever isn't going to change things. But it's the principle behind banning speech for certain segments of society that disturbs me.
I mean no disrespect.

Maybe I should dial it back. I don't remember any subjects coming up that just left my mouth agape when I was nine years old.
Maybe my parents just took more time at home? You have an Asian SN so I'm assuming education was a priority in your home as well. Probably not driving, though.

Sounds like your son was being the classroom smartass.
