If your son is like 5 then you're right to be upset but if he's 10+ then he knows what that word means and was being a smart arse

My son is 9 and is a straight-A student. He asks all kinds of questions to learn about stuff, in this case it was not to be sarcastic more so just to learn.
And def not Spanish class

Public school, right.?

Yep. In a predominantly white suburb of Houston.

The word negro hasn't been used in polite conversation since probably the 80's.
Maybe even the 70s.

Teach him "colored people" instead....like The NAACP does.

Some old black women still use negro instead of black...

Here we go. How's his fastball coming along?

So where's the part where he got in trouble?

The politically correct SJW's arch enemy. They cannot allow such a smart active mind to exist. It threatens their ways. He will be hammered and berated until he is no longer seeking the truth and will simply comply without questions. Loyalty without question. Till underverse come.

Good luck, then.
No one on the planet lacks common sense like a public school administrator.

...at school, when referring to the United Negro College Fund. He simply asked what the difference was between a black person and a negro. Got pulled into the hallway and was told "we don't use the word negro"..... I'm having a chat with the principal tomorrow morning. No news cameras. What in the hell is happening to this country? Sad....
So you've obviously spun the poor kid up about PC etc, he took daddy's example and played at being a smartass, and now you have to go and "set that PC principal straight," eh? I can guarantee you that she (probably a she) will be standing by to knock the chip off your shoulder.
Negro, outside its use in titles and other proper nouns, was not in vogue when I was in elementary school 28 years ago. I was well familiar with the term and what it did and didn't connote, but I never heard it once in school--in 1987.
Sorry you don't fit into the real world oil&gas breaux in Houston.

That the teacher lacked the common sense to simply answer the question in 10 seconds and move on.
Instead, let's make a huge issue over a word, that while still in a title of a major funding organization, is not commonly used today.
See how easy that was to explain?

Serious question. What and what not is it supposed to connote? It literally means "black". Other than being archaic, there's not really supposed to be any virulence behind the word, right?

Is the principal a brother?

I got in trouble in 8th grade for calling my friend, who was black and named Sam, "Sambo".
Neither him or I had any clue that "Sambo" was a racist term used on black people. Neither him nor I considered his nickname offensive nor did anyone else to my knowledge.
Nonetheless a teacher overheard it and I received detention.
I understand that it could be offensive and that children should be disciplined if/when they do say something offensive, but sometimes we take it too far. Sambo isn't inherently offensive in nature like the word "fig*ot" or "ni*ger" etc. I don't see the point in looking for reasons to be offended when no one is, such as the situation in the OP as I don't think anyone was or would be offended by that.

I am betting that if you were able to get down to the truth of the matter, it is a little different than what you are thinking...
regardless, the fact is, that is no longer an acceptable word to use in our society and all you are going to do by throwing a fit and arguing about it is make an arse of yourself and set a bad example for your son...
why not go and talk to the teacher in a reasonable way to find out the other side of the story, and then put your pride aside and teach your son how to get ahead in the world that he will be living in for the next 90 years.....
