Special cards are limited edition pack pulls. TOTW is every Wednesday, TOTY/TOTS is at the end of the calendar year and the season, etc. For example, that Purple card I got was Hero card because Gray won the Championship's POTY award and was available in packs for 2 days or something.

Basically, you can either gamble on packs, which isn't worth it if you aren't Riseupfromtherubble over here, or just build up coins through matches and working the market a little here and there and buy them after the initial price surge at release.

Because TOTS is about to release soon, the entire market's going to crash so hold out on buying anyone too big for a bit. A lot of people sell their squads before and then buy them back cheaper, but that's a big gamble, especially if you have a card that there may only be a few of them on the market at any given time or whatever else.

If I've learned anything, it's that a solid team from 79-83 with 100 Chemistry in the right formation can beat any team you match up against. I had an 88 rated team a few years ago that never played up to its potential while my cheap arse 82 Serie A team ripped shite up in Div 1. So really, unless you luck out and pack a lottery ticket in the form of a legendary or something, don't worry too much about to special cards.

EDIT: Fair warning, though, I just got slaughtered for the first time in quite some time, but I honestly have no answer as to how or why it happened. So you may want to hold off on taking my advice at the moment.
