Really enjoying people's personal Cannon stories on this thread.
I edited the OP to add links to George Morris' feature and book review in The Advocate.

After a life of spectacular highs and lows — of glory, scandal and redemption — Billy Cannon could have had his pick of authors to write his biography. There were two problems: He really didn’t want to tell his story, and didn’t trust anyone to tell it.
Until last year. Now, Cannon’s life is, literally, an open book.

It wasn't "blocks" of tickets but LSU players used to sell the tickets allotted for their respective families all the time.
This was common practice at most schools back in the day fwiw. Nothing at all remarkable.

Will not get into the debate re his being the greatest of all times at LSU, but pick any other candidates & ask yourself if they could play both ways.Basically the whole game. Back then, there was no open substitution, and he only came off the field for a very short period of time. Paul Deitzel always said that the most remarkable thing about Cannon's run that nite was how hot & incredibly humid it was that nite & yet Cannon only left the field for a handful of plays & was on the goal line stand at the end of the game, he, QB W. Rabb & RB J.Robinson making the game saving tackle. I can name a few who played both ways, Stovall, Casanova come to mind, but no one else won the Heisman. Put that game on ESPN today & he'd be three times as famous as he was back then.

He also has the highest scoring single game in fantasy football history using standard scoring. I remember some article about this after that monster game Vick had a few years ago.
216 yds rushing
114 yds receiving
5 TDs

As an LSU fan in my 30s, I'd be fine if I never heard his name again. Any player who didn't have to play against black athletes shouldn't be considered better than anyone playing today. I've seen his "run". Not that magical to me.

I'm so sick of hearing about Cannon as if he was the best of all time. I'm sure he was great during his era but I think it's a nostalgic greatness people remember more than anything. I don't care if anyone else shares my opinion. Keep down voting away.

Quick update to mention that Billy Cannon will be on www.talk1073.com in just a few minutes at 4.
A few people have mentioned the general practice of selling athelete allotted tickets. Great story in the book details more. Prior to the '58 Ole Miss game (#1 LSU against undefeated Ole Miss), Johnny Robinson and Billy are fielding punts and Johnny asks Billy if he's nervous.
Billy points to the North end zone.
"Feeling great. My whole section sold out".

"Cannon used steroids in HS and college."
That has to be total BS. The steroid the article refers to, Dianabol, wasn't even introduced into the US until the mid 1960's. So unless Cannon went back and played HS and college ball in the late 1960's it must be total BS. People always want to shoot down the top dogs. Zealousy I guess.
