Noticed this convo going on in the r/soccer forum and thought we should give it a go here.

IMHO, right now they are both great talents looking forward. I think as of this very moment Sterling is maybe a tad ahead of Memphis though just because he's a veteran in a top 5 league, which obviously Memphis will also become eventually. I noticed a lot of people are pushing Memphis and saying he's already ahead of Raheem after yesterday's performance, but I think we all have to slow down and admit that it was a game against Brugge, even though I was impressed with the demeanor that he took with both goals. As much as it kills me to say, if he had sunk that backheel from Rooney for the hat trick the internet may have melted.

Memphis certainly has a better end product and I expect that he'll score 10+ BPL goals this season, but that will be because he has to. United do not have a true 9 they can depend on game in and game out, like City do which will certainly cause him to unload more often than Sterling.

I think right now Sterling is better on the ball and attacking defenders, but a lot of that comes back to being comfortable in doing so in the BPL. Memphis will learn that eventually and showed some glimpses of it yesterday. The one thing I've been really impressed at with Sterling thus far is also his defensive work rate which has allowed Kolarov to overlap more than he already did. I think that's certainly limited a number of counters on the left side and has played a large role in our two clean sheets, especially since I didn't think he brought that with his skill set.

I'm sure when the two meet up for the derby the talk between those two will really heat up and I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm sorry but Sterling sucks. He's just a track star.

If i had to choose one to be on my team i'd probably choose Memphis. I really havent seen much of him though to be honest.

Sterling just doesnt really impress me that much.

Sterling's best year without a doubt was 13-14 when he was with Suarez and Sturridge. Having one world class striker and another good striker for him to work off is what helped him stand out. I think the personnel at City can do that for him also and without all the pressure.

I suppose it's a bit unfair to compare the two, even though they both play on the left, due to the fact being that Memphis will have a bigger load on his shoulder to carry United on the scoresheet.

I'd wait for Rooney to continue to suck for a few more matches before completely counting him out, but I'm obviously biased.

Memphis has more experience scoring goals for club and country, and he brings a more complete skill set to the table imo. However, Memphis was tearing it up in the Dutch league the last two seasons, while a less-successful Sterling is well-adjusted to the EPL.

Memphis is big strong, explosive, plays a great ball and can finish.

Sterling is just fast and makes a good cross 2 out of 5 times.

btw your analysis of Memphis clearly shows you never watched him before and probably never heard of him until this summer.

One player scores in the world cup the other vs Lithuania.

If Sterling wasn't English, this conversation wouldn't be happening. Memphis is a far better player.

Comparing Memphis' accolades in the Eridivisie to Sterling's in the BPL is like comparing a qb's passer rating in the CFL to one's in the NFL. It's totally different. You're talking about a league that made Jozy look like a world class finisher two seasons ago.

Like I said, I was impressed with what Memphis did yesterday, but it was against Brugge. He hasn't looked half that good in his two league matches. If you watched Sunday, which I'm assuming you did, Sterling made Ivanovic look like an idiot multiple times. It's not like he's just horrendous.

Eventually, I think both will be great.

ETA: For City I think Sterling fits, and for United Memphis fits also. They fit into their team's mentalities well.

Memphis is still a better player

Memphis has looked just fine in both league games.

Sterling on the other hand wasn't that impressive vs Chelsea and blew his chance vs West Brom

Clearly Sterling and City are a match made in heaven.

Lol Okay, I can't really defend that, but it's not like we needed it to win.

I think Sterling has looked fine in both league games, other than the blown chance. I was not impressed with Memphis in either, but like I said, it was his first two league games. I'm not any where close to writing him off at this point. He'll get it figured out, unless the Jozy Eridivisie curse just rubs off on him somehow.

Me being a homer would be saying Memphis sucks dick, which obviously isn't the case. I was thoroughly entertained with what he did yesterday. As much as I dislike United it would be absolutely retarted of me to say Memphis sucks.

I mean he hasn't only played, but he's been successful in the EPL.

You can sort of get the hype surrounding Memphis when you see him play. I rarely ever see that when I watch Sterling. I don't really know how to explain it. but it just feels different.

(I think the Ox is right up there with both of them in my honest homer opinion)
