But, I don't think you should ignore the fact that last year, his YPC wasn't anywhere near the guys you listed.
Correct, of eligible WRs he was 83 out of 89 in YPC. By defintion that's a possession WR...a WR who catches a lot of balls with a low average. Not sure why so many are getting upset. Jarvis Landry is also a possession WR, as is Welker. Edelman too. Do they occasionally make big plays? Yes sure but the majority of their catches are the dump off short gain variety.

They don't have the skill set of Cooks though. He has elite speed and can burn defenses. These guys don't do that.

Antonio Brown in his 1st year posted an AVG of 10.4.
Randall Cobb in his 2nd year posted an AVG of 11.9.
Jordy Nelson in his 1st year posted an AVG of 11.1.
Does that mean they are possession receivers too?
Because as their game IQ improved, their routes began to change a whole lot. They were able to read defenses better and as a result became players who can run a full route tree and make plays.
Resulting in Brown's last 4 years averaging around 14, Nelson's last 4 years averaging around 16, and Cobb's last 2 years averaging around 14.
But sure, possession receiver he is.
Top 10 Leaders in receiving the past 3 years (WR only):
2014: A.Brown (129), D.Thomas (111), J.Jones(104), E.Sanders (101), G.Tate (99), J.Nelson (98), and J.Edelman (92)
2013: P.Garcon (113), A.Brown (110), A.Johnson (109), J.Edelman (105), B.Marshall (100), AJGreen (98), K.Wright (94), D.Bryant (93), D.Thomas (92), and A.Jeffery (89)
2012: C.Johnson (122), B.Marshall (118), W.Welker (118), A.Johnson (112), R.Wayne (106), AJGreen (97), D.Thomas (94), and R.White (92)

Cooks was used the wrong way last year. He should be running real routes, not just short stuff and screens. Maybe last year he didn't know enough of the playbook to run all the routes that would otherwise increase his YPC
